Are radar speed signs proven to slow drivers down?
Yes. Studies have found that radar speed signs reduce speeds by an average of 10%, with effects lasting several miles beyond the sign. Signs are most effective on streets where traffic averages 10 mph+ over the limit.
What digit size should I choose?
12"" digits are the MUTCD-compliant minimum for public roads. 11"" compact signs are ideal for private roads and campuses. 15"" and 18"" are readable from a distance and on roadways with higher posted speed limits.
What power option should I choose?
Solar is ideal for permanent sites and supports placement in most locations, whereas AC power supports shaded locations and signs with duty cycle demands. Lithium batteries are also available to support temporary signage needs, with the ability to power a portable sign for weeks between charges.
How should flash and strobe thresholds be set?
Driver speeds should be displayed 3-5 mph over the limit, with the digits set to flash for violations 5 mph and up. Strobe alerts should be set to 8-10 mph over the limit, with the display capped at 15-20 mph over to deincentivize excessive speeding.
Can we collect data without an active speed display?
Yes. When set in stealth mode, our signs record speeds and volume while the display remains dark, providing a baseline before the sign goes live and supporting before-and-after data results.
