Pedestrian crossing at an RRFB-equipped crosswalk

Sound familiar?

Drivers don't yield

Marked crosswalks and static signs stop getting noticed. At uncontrolled crossings, drivers roll through unless something makes them look.

Night is the problem

Three in four pedestrian deaths happen in the dark, most of them away from intersections. Headlights and retroreflective signs aren't enough.

Nobody presses the button

Only about 28% of pedestrians use the push button, so a system that waits for it protects a fraction of the people crossing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do rectangular rapid flashing beacons really change driver behavior?

Yes. FHWA studies put driver yield rates at RRFB crossings as high as 98%, and pedestrian crashes down as much as 47%. The effect holds at mid-block, school-zone and multilane uncontrolled crossings.

What's the difference between an RRFB, a BlinkerSign® and a BlinkerBeacon™?

All three are LED warning alerts that can be applied at crosswalks. RRFBs are the rapid-flashing light bars that the MUTCD specifies for use at uncontrolled crossings. BlinkerSigns are pedestrian crossing signs with border-embedded, flashing LEDs. BlinkerBeacons are round, highly visible beacons that flash above signs.

What if pedestrians don't press the push button?

With passive detection, our Smart Crosswalk systems detect them anyway. The activation area is highly configurable, allowing agencies to draw custom zones depending on the crosswalk location—ensuring your systems activate when a pedestrian approaches. All systems will still come equipped with push buttons to adhere to ADA guidance.

Do your systems work at night?

Yes. Our led-enhanced alerts are visible in the evening hours, and we also offer dedicated measures for enhanced nighttime visibility. Our SafeWalk® Crosswalk Illuminator lights the crossing when the system is activated with beam and floodlight LEDs, drastically increasing visibility of the crosswalk. Additionally, Illuminated Pedestrian Crossing Signs and VizMark® Pavement Marking Enhancements are available to enhance nighttime pedestrian safety further.

Do I need Smart Hub?

Every system works on its own without cloud connectivity. However, Smart Hub is required to access and manage each system’s smart features — including passive detection zones, SafeWalk®, and event capture. A one-year subscription to Smart Hub is automatically included with each Smart Crosswalk purchase to help agencies get started.
