Does traffic calming actually work?
Yes. Radar signs cut average speeds by about 10%, and the effect carries for miles. FHWA found speed humps, cushions and tables each cut 85th-percentile speeds by roughly 18–19%. Children living near traffic calming have 53–60% lower odds of injury.
How do I know which system to pick?
We always recommend starting with data collection to get a clear picture of what's happening on your roads. This can be done with covert data collectors or radar speed signs in stealth mode. Where speeding is moderate, activate the display on your radar speed signs and/or add rubber traffic calming (speed humps, cushions or tables). Move to enforcement (speed cameras) in locations where the most stubborn speeding issues remain. The most effective strategies take a multilayer approach — our experts can help you pick the right mix for your streets.
How do we find out whether speeding is really happening?
Run a speed study. A covert data collector, or a radar speed sign in stealth mode, records speeds and volumes for a week or two without changing driver behavior — so you have a baseline before you decide which countermeasures will be most effective.
