An innovative solution to emergency vehicle concerns on traffic calmed routes, speed cushions slow cars down without significantly affecting emergency response time. Designed as several small speed humps installed across the width of the road with spaces between them, the speed cushions slow cars down to between 15-20 mph as they ride over them. However, the wider axle of emergency vehicles such as fire trucks and ambulances allows them to straddle the cushions, driving over them without slowing down.
